STEPHEN FARTHING RA - THE KNOWLEDGE Details Page

9 June - 17 July 2010. Wed - Sat 12 - 5pm and by appointment.

Paintings and drawings covering twenty years of travel to cities throughout five continents, pieced together from many notebook drawings made during strategically planned walks designed to 'learn' the city.

The generic title 'The Knowledge' of each painting is borrowed from, and intentionally references, the exam London taxi drivers take to demonstrate their knowledge of the city.

A series of small sculptures, TIN CITIES by well known public artist and filmmaker; ANDY HAZELL, accompanies the THE KNOWLEDGE exhibition. These quirky and dynamic small pieces, each a ‘portrait’ of the same cities that FARTHING has focused his attention upon, are constructed from reclaimed tin containers condensing the geography and well-known landmarks of each city into small recognizable ‘floating’ islands.
