Siân Bowen (b. 1959) studied at Newcastle University (1977-1981) and Edinburgh College of Art (1982/83). She was Monbusho Scholar in the Painting School of Kyoto University of Arts, Japan (1985-1987). She was Artist-in-Residence at Burford House, Worcestershire in 1996 and invited artist at Villa Romana, Florence in 2000. She carried out a Visual Arts Residency at Angel Row Gallery in 2003 and during 2003-04 she undertook a 'Time & Space' residency at METAL, London.
Siân has exhibited in solo shows overseas at the Tamura Gallery, Tokyo (1989), the British Council Gallery, Madras (1994), the EPO Gallery, Munich (1995) and the Kunstverein, Schwäbisch Hall, Germany (2004), other solo exhibitions include Inverleith House, Edinburgh (1995), Café Gallery, London (1998) and the Hart Gallery, London (1998 & 2000). Her exhibition Ream toured to Aspex Gallery, Portsmouth; Mead Gallery, Coventry, and Angel Row Nottingham during 2003-4. She has been included in group exhibitions in Italy, Germany, Denmark and Slovakia as well numerous exhibitions in this country including Six Artists and the Northern Landscape , Berwick Gymnasium (1995); Oriel Mostyn 10 (1998); Drawing - the Process , Kingston University (2003) and Look to This Day , Castlefield Gallery, Manchester (2004). She has regularly been selected for the Jerwood Drawing Prize receiving Second Prize in 2001.
Her work is included in the British Museum, British Council, European Patent Office, Arts Council England North East and Paintings in Hospitals, Scotland. She lives and works in Northumberland and is Associate Lecturer in Fine Art, University of Northumbria.
